Indian Investigators Retrieve Black Box Data from Fatal Air India Express Crash

In a crucial development following the tragic Air India Express crash, Indian investigators have successfully downloaded data from the aircraft’s black boxes — a major step forward in understanding what led to the deadly accident. The crash, which occurred in Kozhikode, Kerala, involved a Boeing 737-800 that overshot the runway during heavy rain on August 7, 2020. It claimed the lives of 21 people, including both pilots, and injured over 100 others.

The recovery and analysis of black box data — which includes the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) — is a standard but vital part of aviation accident investigations. These devices provide critical insights into what was happening in the cockpit and how the aircraft was performing in the moments leading up to the crash.

According to officials from India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), the black boxes were retrieved in intact condition and sent to labs for analysis. The data retrieved is expected to shed light on the pilots' decision-making process, possible mechanical issues, and the sequence of events that caused the aircraft to skid off the tabletop runway and plunge down a 35-foot slope.

Initial reports suggest that poor weather, including heavy rainfall, played a major role. However, investigators are also examining other potential factors such as pilot fatigue, aircraft condition, air traffic control communication, and runway surface friction. The CVR is especially crucial, as it captures the final conversations and audio cues inside the cockpit — often revealing stress levels, technical alarms, and coordination between the pilot and co-pilot.

The Kozhikode airport, where the crash occurred, has a tabletop runway — built on a plateau with steep drops at either end — which requires extremely precise landing maneuvers. The crash reignited a long-standing debate about the safety of such runways, especially in monsoon conditions. The black box data will help determine whether procedural norms were followed and if any human or technical error played a part.

India’s Civil Aviation Minister and senior DGCA officials have stressed that the investigation will be thorough, transparent, and aimed at preventing future tragedies. Once analyzed, the data from the black boxes will feed into a detailed final report by the AAIB, which will also include recommendations for improving operational safety at challenging airports like Kozhikode.

The crash was particularly tragic because the flight was part of India’s Vande Bharat mission — a government initiative to repatriate citizens stranded abroad during the COVID-19 pandemic. The aircraft was returning from Dubai and carrying a high number of vulnerable passengers, including children and elderly individuals.

The successful recovery of black box data represents a critical milestone in the pursuit of answers and accountability. While it may take months for the final report to be published, the information gleaned from the CVR and FDR will undoubtedly play a central role in shaping India’s future aviation safety protocols.
